Wat Pathum Wanaram (The Lotus Temple)
Wat Pathum Wanaram is a royal Buddhist temple located between the Central World & Siam Paragon shopping Malls. It is also known as the lotus temple.
The temple dates back to 1857 when it was founded by King Rama IV next to his Sa Pratum Palace. Wat Pathum Wanaram is an oasis of peace in one of the busiest commercial areas of Bangkok. The temple has a sad recent history as six people taking refuge were shot dead by soldiers during the red shirt riots of 2010. Many Thai people believe that their ghosts haunt the temple.
The Courtyard
On entering the compound you will find a large number of Buddha images underneath a Bodhi tree that came from Sri Lanka. The main Buddha image is Phra Si Maha Poh which came from India and was a gift from Britains Queen Victoria This is a popular spot for Thai worshippers who light incense & candles while praying. The area is decorated with lotus flowers.
The Viharn
Inside the viharn are the Buddha images Phra Soem & Phra Saen which were brought from Vientiane in Laos in the early 19th century. Phra Soem is believed to make worshippers wishes come true while Phra Saen can bring rain and cure drought.
The Ordination Hall
Inside the Ordination Hall is the principal Buddha image Phra Sai who also came from Laos. The walls of the hall are decorated with many beautiful murals depicting life in old Bangkok in great detail.
The Stupa
The stupa of Wat Patum Wanaram contains the ashes of several members of the royal family including the ashes of King Rama VIII.
Wat Pathum Wanaram Garden
A popular spot in the temple compound is the shady garden area that is a mini forest. Thai people come here to meditate in a quiet, peaceful setting. It is a great place to take a break from shopping and escape from the hustle and bustle of Ratchaprasong.
Wat Pathum Wanaram is not a must see temple and does not get a lot of tourists. It is worth a look if you are visiting the nearby nine shrines of Ratchaprasong or just want to relax somewhere quiet.
